I ended my last post with "let's see what more has to come for smart phones" and here we have another milestone.
U.S. based Tech giant Amazon, filed a patent of Air Bags for Smart Phones, yes you read it right Air Bags for Smart phone. We are pretty much familiar with ABS (Air Bag System) as it is in use from quite a long time in Cars for safety of driver and other passengers.
Well at this point of time only patent is filed, it cannot be said when we can expect implementation of this idea in actual Market, but whenever it gets implemented it would be interesting. I personally know the pain when you drop your smart phone and its screen get cracks :( . Recently I had to change touch panel of my Samsung Galaxy **(Its quite outdated :P) and it costed me around 1700 bucks.
Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos filed this patent named "A system and method for protecting devices from impact damage” using airbags, springs and gas propulsion to break the impact could minimize the damage. It says 'Prior to impact between a surface and a device, a determination of a risk of damage to the device is made. If the risk of damage to the device exceeds a threshold, a protection system is activated to reduce or eliminate damage to the device.'
Idea is brilliant even I had thought to have some thing to cover the risk when my phone's screen broke, but the point her is do we really want such a complex system in our phone which will make them more bulky and costly when we can achieve similar protection by using a screen guard available in Market for just Rs 200-400. Despite of all these facts , some how I am still eager to see a phone felling on ground and ABS popping up to assure safe landing of phone.
